Algae Aquaponics - the ultimate closed aquatic productive system.

Welcome to the world of algae aquaponics. Here you will find everything you need to know about alga aquaponics to set up your own indoor micro system or backyard production aquaponics system.

I am an aquatic biologist, sustainable developer and DIY-tinker, and I will do my best to inspire you and get you up to date about the future of sustainable aquatic farming.

Microalgae raceway system

Why bother?
Our poulation is ever increasing and in order to feed us we must become smarter in the way we produce our food. The challenge is to get as much quality food out of a minimal area as possible, without minimal pollution and/or use of poisonous substances.

Aquaponics have been around for some while now and although the concept struggles to prove itself on a large commercial scale, it  is beautiful from a sustainable urban farming perspective.

Algae have been recieving a tremendous amount of atention during the last decade as a fast growing crop that does not compete for space with traditional food crops, and can provide oils for the biofuel market.

Algae are however so much more. they are a highly valuable foodsource in many parts of the world and the chemical composition of som species are so interesting that they have been named "superfoods"

Algae act as the fundamental component of most aquatic food webs and to me it is intuitive that we should therefore try to use them in aquaponics as well.

Culturing and harvesting water fleas (Daphnia)

Here is a video of how feeding, harvesting and concentration of daphnia can be managed in a small indoor system. Daphnia areused as food for my aquarium fish. I made thi setup over the winter to learn how microalgae, daphnia and fish can be used together in an aquaponics system.
